Choosing a suitable car.
Looking to buy a car for use with one of our camper van conversion modules?
Simple camper van conversion modules are designed to work with a large selection of vehicles from different manufacturers and we appreciate that the choice can be quite overwhelming when you are looking to buy an appropriate car.
The information in this guide aims to provide you with a brief overview of each of the cars that we produce a camper van conversion module for to help you with your buying decision. You can find a huge selection of these compatible cars for sale on the most popular used vehicle marketplaces such as AutoTrader, ebay and Motors and with prices ranging from less than £1,000 to over £30,000, all budgets are catered for.
Final choice will come down to personal preference, but if you still remain unsure about the best car to choose for using with one of our camper van conversion modules, we would offer the following advice: do not get too hung up about exact vehicle choice, but have a look for cars in your local area that are in good condition with a service history record and proceed from there!
Citroen Berlingo
MK1 1998-2009
The original Citroen Berlingo is still one of our favourite vehicles to use with our camper van conversion modules. Its box styling and high roof provide huge amounts of interior space for such a compact vehicle, making it hugely practical as both an everyday car and a micro camper van. This generation is now cheap to buy with numerous versions available on the used car market. Running costs are low, although we would recommend avoiding older 1.9D variants since fuel economy is poor compared with the newer HDI diesel engines. Multispace variants with the optional “Modutop” roof system feature ingenious roof storage compartments and full-length glass roof panels and would be our top choice if you can find one.
We like the Citroen Berlingo MK1 for its low purchase cost, low running costs and functional interior space.

MK2 2008-2018
The second-generation Citroen Berlingo is our top car choice, alongside the near-identical Peugeot Partner MK2. Numerous versions are available on the used car market with a huge choice of economical diesel and petrol engines. Unlike the first-generation Citroen Berlingo MK1, the newer MK2 platform is no longer based on a van and as a result feels more like a car, making it more comfortable and quieter to drive. Interior space is also increased over the Citroen Berlingo MK1, with plenty of headroom for all but the tallest users with our camper van conversion module installed, and a good amount of storage space underneath the module. You will also find numerous neat storage compartments throughout the car.
We like the Citroen Berlingo MK2 for its driving comfort, spacious interior and huge used choice.

MK2 7 seater 2008-2018
The Citroen Berlingo MK2 is also available in a 7 seater variant. This version is the same length as 5 seater variants but has a third row of seats in the boot of the car. Boot space is very limited with the third row of seats installed and these must be removed to install our camper van conversion module, but removal is quick and easy as the seats unclip from their brackets without the need for tools. The boot seat mounting brackets are neatly recessed into the boot floor, but the design of the brackets does make the boot floor higher. Our Citroen Berlingo MK2 7 seater camper van conversion is specifically designed to accommodate the additional height of the boot floor whilst still providing the same headroom as 5 seater variants.
We like the Citroen Berlingo MK2 for its driving comfort, spacious interior and huge used choice.

MK3 2018-present
The third generation Citroen Berlingo MK3, launched in 2018, is even more practical than its MK2 predecessor and is a firm favourite for use with our camper van conversion modules. It is roomier inside (whilst being only 20mm longer), more comfortable and packed with an array of clever storage features and up-to-date safety and driving technology. Unlike the previous generation Citroen Berlingo MK1 and MK2 cars, the rear seats in the MK3 no longer fold and tip; instead MK3 cars feature a cleverly designed system whereby the rear seats fold into the floor. This rear seat design allowed us to design our Citroen Berlingo MK3 camper van conversion module with a lower overall height compared with MK1 and MK2 cars meaning that the MK3 offers more headroom.
We like the Citroen Berlingo MK3 for its ingenious rear seat design and up-to-date safety and driving technology.

The Citroen Berlingo MK3 is also available in a 350mm longer XL version. UK supplied XL versions normally have 7 seats and although the third row of seats must be removed to install our camper van conversion module, removal is quick and easy as the boot seats unclip from their recessed floor mounted brackets without the need for tools. Our Citroen Berlingo MK3 XL camper van conversion module is 1925mm long (150mm longer than all our other Berlingo modules) making it practical for even the tallest users. Additionally, the Citroen Berlingo MK3 XL is also compatible with our standard length Citroen Berlingo MK3 camper van conversion module, for users who would appreciate the extra 350mm storage space over a longer bed length.
We like the Citroen Berlingo MK3 for its ingenious rear seat design and up-to-date safety and driving technology.

Citroen Nemo
2009-2015
The Citroen Nemo is the smallest vehicle that we produce a camper van conversion module for, alongside the Fiat Qubo and Peugeot Bipper Tepee which share the same design architecture. Its compact dimensions make it easy to drive and park, whilst the small engines are very economical with low running costs. A true micro camper van, the Citroen Nemo is both shorter in length and lower in height compared to the larger Citroen Berlingo and is therefore not a practical choice for taller users due to the overall smaller size and reduced headroom. The Fiat Qubo, Peugeot Bipper Tepee and Citroen Nemo all use our “Small” camper van conversion module design which has a reduced bed platform length compared to the other vehicles that we produce for.
We like the Citroen Nemo for its compact dimensions, quirky design and low running costs.

Fiat Doblo
MK1 2001-2010
Following the trend of other van-based cars in production at the time such as the Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Renault Kangoo, the first-generation Fiat Doblo features practical box styling that provides a huge amount of interior space. Equipment is basic inside, but this does mean that there are fewer things to break and the Doblo has a reputation for being reliable and tough. Fuel economy is good for nearly all engine variants but watch out for the high road tax rates on the older 1.9D engines and petrol engines. It is also worth noting that headroom with our camper van conversion module installed is not quite as good for the Doblo as for the Citroen Berlingo or Peugeot Partner but is still adequate for most users; a high-top version of the Doblo is also available for those seeking additional headroom but these are hard to find.
We like the Fiat Doblo MK1 for its low running costs, great visibility due to the large windows and tough build.

Fiat Doblo
MK2 2010-2020
The second-generation Fiat Doblo deviates from the first generation by using a car-based platform, making the handling and driving experience more car-like and comfortable. Whilst the external dimensions are comparable to the Citroen Berlingo MK2 and Peugeot Partner MK2, the Fiat Doblo MK2 has been designed to offer more internal storage space than its rivals. Headroom with our camper van conversion module installed is not quite as good as for the Citroen Berlingo MK2 or Peugeot Partner MK2, but the Fiat Doblo MK2 does offer more storage space underneath the module in the boot and behind the front seats when the sleeping platform is unfolded. As with the first-generation Fiat Doblo MK1, fuel economy is good for nearly all engine choices, especially Multijet variants, but watch out for the high road tax rates on some of the petrol engines.
We like the Fiat Doblo MK2 for its large amounts of storage space and reliable, economical engines.

Fiat Qubo
2008-2020
The Fiat Qubo shares the same platform as the Citroen Nemo and Peugeot Bipper Tepee and is the smallest vehicle that we produce a camper van conversion module for. The longer production cycle (it was available new until 2020) means that it is easier to find a used Qubo than a Nemo or Bipper Tepee, and the Qubo is also available with Fiat’s excellent Multijet 93bhp diesel engine which offers better performance and fuel economy. A true micro camper van, the Fiat Qubo is both shorter in length and lower in height compared to the larger Fiat Doblo and is therefore not a practical choice for taller users due to the overall smaller size and reduced headroom. The Fiat Qubo, Peugeot Bipper Tepee and Citroen Nemo all use our “Small” camper van conversion module design which has a reduced bed platform length compared to the other vehicles that we produce for.
We like the Fiat Qubo for its compact dimensions, quirky design, nippy performance (93bhp version) and low running costs.

Ford Tourneo Connect
2022-present
The new Ford Tourneo Connect released in 2022 is the first vehicle to be sold by Ford under an agreement with Volkswagen and is a rebadged VW Caddy Life, but with a significant price advantage. As to be expected from the latest generation of vehicles, the Ford Tourneo Connect is packed with the latest safety and driving technology and shares the same maximum 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating as the Caddy. It’s an incredibly practical vehicle with a choice of economical VW sourced petrol or diesel engines, all of which feature Auto Start-Stop technology. As of 2023, the choice of new petrol and diesel engined MPVs is much smaller now that Stellantis Group models (Citroen Berlingo MK3, Peugeot Rifter and Vauxhall Combo Life) are only available new as all-electric, making the Ford Tourneo Connect a great value option if you are looking to purchase new.
We like the Ford Tourneo Connect for its 5-star Euro NCAP rating, generous level of standard equipment and price advantage over its rivals.

The Ford Tourneo Connect is also available in a 400mm longer “Grand” version sharing the new VW Caddy Maxi Life platform and with the same 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating as the standard version, making it very safe to drive. The Ford Grand Tourneo Connect is available as a 5 seater, or as a 7 seater option with a third row of seats fitted. If fitted, the third row of seats must be removed prior to installing our camper van conversion module but removal is quick and easy as the boot seats unclip from their recessed floor mounted brackets without the need for tools. Interior space is huge, making it a great choice for taller users wanting to install our 1925mm XL length camper van conversion module, although it’s also worth noting that our standard length module can be installed instead if you would prefer additional storage capacity over a longer bed platform.
We like the Ford Grand Tourneo Connect for its 5-star Euro NCAP rating, huge interior space and competitive pricing.

Mercedes Citan
2012-2020
The little-known Mercedes Citan is essentially a re-badged Renault Kangoo MK2, although it has undergone further development to enable it to be sold as a more premium vehicle. The interior space and layout remain identical to the Renault Kangoo MK2 with the Mercedes Citan featuring the same ingenious fold-flat rear seat system that offers ample headroom for even the tallest users with our camper van conversion module installed. Diesel engine versions fitted with BlueEfficiency technology packs offer very impressive fuel economy, although all versions are economical to drive. If you don’t mind paying a premium over the alternatives, then the Mercedes Citan is a great choice and as per the Renault Kangoo MK2, is one of our favourite vehicles to use with one of our camper van conversion modules.
We like the Mercedes Citan for its smart looks and ingenious rear seat system with great headroom.

Peugeot Bipper
2009-2015
The Bipper is the Peugeot badged version of the Citroen Nemo, and alongside the Fiat Qubo is the smallest vehicle that we produce for – it uses our “Small” camper van conversion module with a reduced bed platform length compared with the larger Peugeot Partner. It is near-identical to the Nemo and even uses the same engines; the only difference being that the Bipper Tepee was on sale in the UK until 2015. The interior space is smaller than the Peugeot Partner, with the Bipper Tepee being both shorter and 80mm lower in height so headroom is limited for taller users. However, the compact dimensions make it very easy to drive and park and the small engines are very economical with low running costs.
We like the Peugeot Bipper Tepee for its compact dimensions, quirky design and low running costs.

Peugeot Partner
MK1 1998-2009
The Peugeot Partner MK1 is near-identical to the Citroen Berlingo MK1 (they share exactly the same platform) and as per the first-generation Berlingo, it remains one of our favourite vehicles to use with our camper van conversion modules. The box design means that the interior is very spacious for such a compact car, and whilst more basic inside compared with the second generation Peugeot Partner MK2, it is hugely practical. There are plenty available on the used market making it cheap to buy, and running costs are low especially if you can find a vehicle with the excellent 1.6HDI engine. Quiksilver variants feature ingenious roof storage compartments and full-length glass roof panels, although they are now harder to find.
We like the Peugeot Partner MK1 for its low purchase cost, low running costs and functional interior space.

MK2 2008-2018
The second-generation Peugeot Partner MK2 is our top vehicle choice alongside the near-identical Citroen Berlingo MK2. It is more refined and better insulated against road noise than the Peugeot Partner MK1 as the platform is no longer based on a van and is more comfortable to drive. It is marginally bigger than the Partner MK1 too, with plenty of headroom for all but the tallest users with our camper van conversion module installed and a good amount of storage space underneath the module. There are also plenty of neat storage compartments throughout the vehicle. All the diesel engines and petrol engines (except the earlier 1.6 petrol available until 2010) offer excellent fuel economy and low tax rates.
We like the Peugeot Partner MK2 for its driving comfort, spacious interior and huge used choice.

The boot seat mounting brackets are neatly recessed into the boot floor, but the design of the brackets does make the boot floor higher. Peugeot Rifter
2018-present
Launched in 2018, the Peugeot Rifter replaced the Peugeot Partner MK2 and is Peugeot’s version of the current generation Citroen Berlingo MK3 – they share the same platform. It is roomier inside than its MK2 predecessor (whilst being only 20mm longer), is more comfortable and is packed with an array of clever storage features and modern technology. Unlike the older Peugeot Partner MK1 and MK2 cars, the rear seats no longer fold and tip; instead the Rifter features cleverly designed rear seats that fold into the floor. This rear seat design allowed us to design our Peugeot Rifter camper van conversion module with a lower overall height compared with previous generation cars meaning that the Rifter offers more headroom.

Renault Kangoo
MK1 1999-2009
The first-generation Renault Kangoo MK1 is now very cheap to buy and readily available with the diesel engines being our recommended choice due to the excellent fuel economy. Although quite basic inside compared with newer cars, the interior is functional and spacious with large windows all-round that offer excellent visibility and the lack of electronic gadgets does mean that there are less things to break. The Renault Kangoo MK1 also has lower rear seats than the equivalent Citroen Berlingo MK1, Peugeot Partner MK1 and Fiat Doblo MK1 cars which translates into more headroom with our camper van conversion module installed compared with its rivals. This makes the Renault Kangoo MK1 a great choice for taller users. Many variants also feature neat aircraft-style overhead storage compartments that run along both sides of the interior to create additional storage space.
We like the Renault Kangoo MK1 for its low purchase price, spacious interior with great headroom and large windows.

MK2 2009-2020
The Renault Kangoo MK2 is another of our favourite cars for using with one of our camper van conversion modules, although UK stock is limited because Renault ceased UK sales in 2012. As with the Citroen Berlingo MK2, Fiat Doblo MK2 and Peugeot Partner MK2, the second-generation Renault Kangoo MK2 is no longer based on a van platform, so the driving experience is more refined and car-like. The Renault Kangoo MK2 was also the first vehicle on our list to feature the ingenious fold-flat rear seat system used in the latest Citroen Berlingo MK3, Peugeot Rifter and Vauxhall Combo Life cars. Headroom with our camper van conversion module installed is therefore better compared with the Citroen Berlingo MK2, Fiat Doblo MK2 and Peugeot Partner MK2 alternatives. We would recommend avoiding the petrol engines since the annual UK road tax is £315.
We like the Renault Kangoo MK2 for its ingenious rear seat system and spacious interior with great headroom.

Skoda Roomster
2006-2015
Another firm favourite with us for using for car camping alongside the Skoda Yeti, the Skoda Roomster is no bigger than a family hatchback but is comparable to the Skoda Yeti in terms of interior space due to its squared-up styling. The Skoda Roomster uses an identical rear seat system to the Skoda Yeti that offers the same immense flexibility; the rear seats can be moved forwards or backwards, can be reclined, and can each be removed individually to maximise storage space. As with the Skoda Yeti, the Skoda Roomster does offer less headroom and internal width than the other vehicles on this list, so we have omitted the pop-up table feature for our Skoda Roomster camper van conversion module, but the 1800mm long sleeping platform will still comfortably accommodate most users. Skodas are also very reliable (it is a VW Group brand) and all petrol and diesel engine variants for the Skoda Roomster are very economical.
We like the Skoda Roomster for its driving comfort, compact size and its reliable, economical engines.

Skoda Yeti
2009-2017
As with the Skoda Roomster, the Skoda Yeti differs from the other vehicles on this list in that it does not have a panel van equivalent; it is designed entirely on a car-based platform. As a result, the Skoda Yeti is a much more comfortable car to drive, with a top-quality interior and a comprehensive list of standard equipment, making it our top choice if you are planning frequent long journeys. It is also one of the few cars on our list to have been awarded the maximum five-star rating in the tougher Euro NCAP crash tests, introduced in 2009. Whilst interior space is still excellent, the Skoda Yeti does not feature the characteristic van-like shape of the other vehicles on this list which means that headroom and internal space are reduced in comparison. Our Skoda Yeti camper van conversion module still offers a 1800mm long sleeping platform, but we have omitted the pop-up table feature for this vehicle since headroom is insufficient to sit upright comfortably.
We like the Skoda Yeti for its ability to cover long distances with ease and its top-quality interior.

The Toyota Proace City Verso is currently not available in the UK and should not be confused with the larger and similarly named Toyota Proace Verso variants. The Toyota Proace “City” Verso is a more compact vehicle built on exactly the same platform as the Citroen Berlingo MK3, Peugeot Rifter and Vauxhall Combo Life and therefore shares the same external and internal dimensions. As per the Citroen, Peugeot and Vauxhall equivalents, the Toyota Proace City Verso is packed with the latest safety features and modern technology, in addition to featuring the same cleverly designed rear seats that fold into the floor. It’s a great choice for using with our camper van conversion module as it offers more headroom than earlier generation vehicles, is comfortable to drive and is economical to run.

2011-2017
A re-badged Fiat Doblo MK2, the Vauxhall Combo Life 2011-2017 is a rare vehicle on UK roads, but is still an excellent choice for use with our camper van conversion module if you do manage to find one for sale. Other than the Vauxhall badging, the Vauxhall Combo Life is near-identical to the Fiat Doblo MK2. The external dimensions are comparable to the Citroen Berlingo MK2 and Peugeot Partner MK2, but the Vauxhall Combo Life does offer more internal storage space than both rivals. Headroom with our camper van conversion module installed is not quite as good as for the Citroen and Peugeot equivalents but the Vauxhall Combo Life does offer more storage space underneath the module, both in the boot and behind the front seats.
